Research at IISER Pune covers a wide range of research areas in Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics. In addition, we actively encourage research initiatives that span multiple disciplines.
IISER Pune offers modern research laboratories and computational facilities as well as comfortable housing for students selected into a graduate program at the institute. A core component of graduate student life at IISER Pune includes opportunities to participate in a broad range of seminars, meetings and workshops. This gives our students opportunities to interact with people from other research organizations within the country and abroad.
IISER Pune runs PhD program in Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics. For selecting the students to register in respective PhD program, IISER Pune conducts written screening test in specific disciplines followed by the interviews. However, to be considered for PhD program in Biology or Chemistry, clearing any ONE written screening test (Physics/Chemistry/Biology/Mathematics) is sufficient. Students can then opt to be interviewed for PhD program in Biology or Chemistry. No prior knowledge of Biology or Chemistry is required.
Date of entrance test and interviews: 20 - 22 May 2013.
Minimum Educational Qualification:
- 60% marks for General/OBC (55% for SC/ST) in M.Sc in any branch of Science –Physics/Chemistry/Mathematics/Biological sciences/Ecology & EnvironmentalSciences/Biodiversity or equivalent. B.E/B.Tech/M.Tech or MBBS degree holders may also apply.
Additionally, the candidate MUST have qualified any ONE of the following exams:
National Eligibility Test (NET) with VALID CSIR-JRF/UGC-JRF or DBT-JRF-A or ICMR-JRF or ICAR-JRF or BINC. Candidates eligible for INSPIRE-PhD fellowship may also apply.
OR
Must have passed CSIR-LS or DAE-JEST or NBHM or GATE or GPAT in last two years.
- For CSIR-LS rank-holders up to rank 200 are eligible.
- For DAE-JEST/GATE/GPAT rank-holders up to rank 500 are eligible.
OR
IISER BS-MS Dual degree students are exempted from the above requirement provided they have a CGPA which is greater than or equal to 7.0.

Application form has to be filled ONLINE. Click Biology to access the forms. Candidates intending to apply to more than one program/Discipline should apply separate application forms for each program/Discipline.
Fill the online application form completely. Incomplete application forms may be rejected.
Attested copies of all supporting documents (mark sheets, certificates, age proof, caste certificate, etc.) are to be brought in at the time of the interview.
Please carry one photograph. In addition, applicants for Biological/Interdisciplinary Biological/Ecological Sciences should bring along one recommendation letter at the time of interview.
The last date for receipt of completed applications ONLINE is April 15, 2013.
